Finding the Heart of God

(In the Gospel of Mark)

Sept. 2:                             HEARTS FAR AWAY                                  (Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23)

The Pharisees’ fixation on hand washing reminds us not to let our human traditions keep our hearts away from God’s truth and compassion for our lives.

Sept. 9:                              CHANGING THE HEART OF GOD           (Mark 7: 24-37)

The persistence of the Syrophoenician woman reminds us all that no one is an outsider to God, and that in our earnest petitions, we can change God’s heart for the needs of this world.

Sept. 16:                               HEARTACHES                                           (Mark 9: 27-38)

When we are concerned with worldly gain and human power, it causes God’s heart to ache.  And so Jesus gives us an alternate agenda: to take up the cross and follow.

Sept. 23:                              THE HEART OF A CHILD                       (Mark 9: 30-37)

Jesus’ instructions are very clear: if we want to enter the Kingdom of God, we must have the heart of a child.  Paradoxically, the first will be last, but the last will be first.

Sept. 30:                                   HEARTLESS                                         (Mark 9: 38-50)

The disciples want to stop people who are healing in Jesus’ name. But Jesus warns them not to be heartless to those who are spreading the gospel, just because they haven’t been formally ordained.
