Good afternoon super soupers,
I hope everyone is preparing for the cold that is coming. It doesn’t look pretty but this is Minnesota and it is January. I want to remind everyone that this will be our last session this month. Chris and my response to the coming cold is to get on an airplane and fly and fly and fly some more.
I apologize for the lateness of this notice of readings and the Question of the Week. I hope you still have time to read and reflect before tomorrow evening.
We are moving to Part 12, Jesus Judges?, in our guide. Please read the Summary; Jesus Judges the Pious Ones; Pretense Parading as Piety; and Unrighteousness Masquerading as Righteousness (Pp 102-106).
Chapter 23 can be challenging because we see a side of Jesus that many are either unaware of or think was about people from long ago and could not be about today and maybe even ourselves. Jesus has a series of woe statements. They all start with “woe to you” most of them are addressed to the scribes and Pharisees. They had political power and Jesus says they were not living up to their own pious standards.
Our Question of the Week is: “Are there those in our world that you consider to be hypocrites? Why? Has anyone ever accused you of being a hypocrite? Have you ever felt like you were a hypocrite? How or who helps guard you from being hypocritical?”
Grace and peace,
Pastor Scott
