Beloved members and friends of St. John’s United Church of Christ –
This Sunday, our congregation will gather for one of the most joyful and sacred moments in the life of the church: the Sacrament of Baptism. We will celebrate as water is poured, promises are made, and we welcome another beloved child of God into the household of faith. Baptism is always a beautiful day not only for the one being baptized and their family, but for our whole church community, and the whole church, the Body of Christ.
Scripture reminds us that the church is not simply a building or an institution. The church is the living Body of Christ in the world, and Jesus Christ alone is the head of the church. He leads us, guides us, and unites us in love. In baptism, we are joined not only to Christ, but also to one another. We are welcomed into something larger than ourselves. A community of grace, hope, and belonging.
In baptism, we remember first that grace always comes before anything else. Before we choose God, God has already chosen us. Before we can speak words of faith, God has already spoken words of love over our lives. Baptism is a sign of that grace of God’s loving embrace given freely and generously. It is not something we earn, but something we receive with gratitude and joy.
Water is at the heart of this sacrament, and throughout scripture water is a sign of life, renewal, and God’s saving presence. The Spirit moved over the waters of creation. God led the people through the waters into freedom. Jesus himself was baptized in the Jordan River. And now, in baptism, ordinary water becomes a holy sign that God is still creating, still freeing, still renewing lives today.
Baptism also reminds us that faith is never lived alone. When one person is baptized, the whole Body of Christ is strengthened. The congregation makes promises as well to love, encourage, teach, pray for, and walk alongside the baptized person through all the seasons of life. We promise to be a church where faith can grow, where Christ is honored, and where all are welcomed in his name.
For those of us baptized long ago, this Sunday is also an invitation to remember who we are. We belong to Jesus Christ. We are members of his Body. We are connected to one another in covenant love. In times of joy and in times of struggle, baptism continues to speak: You are God’s beloved. Christ is your head. You are not alone.
So come this Sunday with joyful hearts. Come ready to celebrate, to renew your own faith, and to rejoice in the gift of the church. In the splash of water and the promises we make together, may we all hear again the good news: Christ is alive and meets us where we are, Christ is leading his church, and there is room in the Body of Christ for us all.
With gratitude and hope,
Pastor Scott
